PERMITTING HOME BUILDERS LICENSES

Residential home builders licenses are issued to individuals, partnerships, corporations, limited liability companies, and not-for-profit organizations. Building permits are only to be issued to licensees in the way they are licensed.

Example 1 – Corporate License:

John Doe does not hold a residential home builders license. John Doe, Inc. holds a residential home builders license and John Doe is the designated qualifying representative for John Doe, Inc. Scenario 1: John Doe completes an application for a building permit and names himself (John Doe) as the contractor. No permit should be issued because John Doe does not hold a residential home builders license. Scenario 2: John Doe completes an application for a building permit and names John Doe, Inc. as the contractor. Permit should be issued because John Doe, Inc. holds a residential home builders license.

Example 2 – Individual License:

Jane Doe holds an individual residential home builders license and is president of Jane Doe, Inc., which does not hold a residential home builders license. Scenario 1: Jane Doe completes an application for a building permit and names herself (Jane Doe) as the contractor. Permit should be issued because Jane Doe holds a residential home builders license. Scenario 2: Jane Doe completes an application for a building permit and names Jane Doe, Inc. as the contractor. Permit should not be issued because Jane Doe, Inc. does not hold a residential home builders license.
